The periods of drought are particularly harmful to it. Controlling the watering of truffle beds is therefore vital for good productivity. In this context, <\/span><strong style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">WETRUF<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: 400;\">as an innovative start-up, has developed a tool for truffle growers to<\/span> <strong style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">monitor the soil&#8217;s water potential<\/strong> <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: 400;\">and thus better manage watering.<\/span><\/h5><div><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><\/div><h5>The interest of knowing the water potential and the water availability of a soil<\/h5><p>When it comes to controlling crop watering, measuring the percentage of soil moisture is not enough to give a good estimate of the water reserves available to plants and fungi. Indeed, for the same level of soil moisture, the proportion of water that can be extracted varies enormously depending on the nature of the soil, such as its<b>texture<\/b> (levels of clay, silt, sand, porosity) and its<b>structure<\/b>. It is therefore necessary to differentiate between :<\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"> <\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Water <b>gravity<\/b>, which circulates freely through the network of pores in the soil,<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Water <b>usable<\/b>, stored in the pores of the soil and representing the water reserve available to living organisms (plants, fungi, insects, etc.),<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Water <b>unusable<\/b>, present in the pores of the soil but considered unavailable because it requires too much pressure to be extracted by living organisms.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/wetruf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Texture-sol-et-pF-1024x618.png\" alt=\"management - watering - soil - articles - truffles - blog - truffle growing\" width=\"1024\" height=\"618\"><\/figure><p>It is therefore essential to assess the proportion of water that can be used for any crop, including truffles. Measuring <b>pF<\/b>, the <b>water potential<\/b>, is therefore much more suitable for watering control. The pF represents the pressure that needs to be applied to extract the water from the soil. Theoretically, the pF index can reach values between 1 and 6. In practice, however, it is generally observed that for waterlogged soil (\u201c<b>field capacity<\/b>\u201d), the pF varies between <b>2 and 2.5.<\/b> When the usable water reserve decreases, as in the case of drought for example, the value of the water potential increases. When the pF reaches a value of 4-4.2, the water remaining in the soil porosity becomes too difficult for plants and fungi to extract, as the pressure required to do so is too great. Plants then begin to wilt (the \u201c<b>wilting<\/b> <b>point<\/b>\u201d is reached at <b>pF = 4.2<\/b>). The useful water reserve of a soil is therefore considered to be between pF = 2.5 and 4.2.<\/p><p>Beyond that, the water reserve is unusable. In order to effectively manage the water supply to the field in a controlled and reasoned manner, it is therefore strongly recommended to use tools enabling <em>in-situ<\/em> measurement of pF up to a value of 4.2.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 19.200001px; color: var( --e-global-color-secondary );\"><b>The use of sensor is therefore strongly recommended to ensure that water is added in a controlled and reasoned way, as part of an ecological approach to preserving resources.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-08987b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"08987b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e669dfc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e669dfc\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-0b3fb72\" data-id=\"0b3fb72\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-426f530 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"426f530\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: 2rem; text-align: justify; color: var( --e-global-color-secondary );\">Our innovation: the monitoring of the pF in trufficulture<\/span><\/h4><p>Based on studies carried out by the IAM(Tree\/Micro-organism Interactions) of the INRAE\/Universit\u00e9 de Lorraine joint research unit <b>WETRUF<\/b>has developed a tool for the direct monitoring of pF in the soil: the <a href=\"https:\/\/wetruf.com\/produits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pF Tracer<\/a> <b style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 19.200001px;\">\u00ae<\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">This innovation is part of an ecological approach to preserving water resources. This tool was developed following the <\/span><b style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">CulturTruf<\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">, coordinated by <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inrae.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">INRAE<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">, in collaboration with <b>French Federation of Truffle Growers<\/b>and financed by<b>FranceAgriMer<\/b>. Implemented since 2016, this project aims to study the effect of cultivation techniques on the biological cycle of the truffle and to observe their impact on the soil&#8217;s water regime. Initial results from this project have shown that for black truffles, the threshold value at which irrigation of the truffle bed becomes necessary is pF = 4. Keeping the pF below 4 has enabled truffle growers in the network to achieve normal production despite the various droughts. On the other hand, an experiment using a threshold of pF = 4 as the watering threshold showed a significantly positive impact compared with trees that were not watered. The <\/span><b style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">pF Tracer \u00ae<\/b><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\"> is a simple tool that&#8217;s easy to use in the field. It consists of a playback unit specially adapted to <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/wetruf.com\/en\/products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gypsum probes<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-secondary ); font-size: 1rem;\">This innovation, based on a specific calibration, enables pF to be read accurately and directly, without the need for any conversion. It&#8217;s easy to install. The sensor are buried in the ground at the foot of the truffle trees. All you have to do is connect the measurement box to it and you can monitor the soil hydric potential.<\/span><\/p><figure><\/figure><figure><\/figure><p><strong>LICENCE DE SAVOIR-FAIRE INRAE &#8211; production<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The project<b>CulturTruf<\/b> highlights the fact that growing truffles naturally requires less water than other crops. Monitoring the soil hydric potential during dry spells means that we can accurately assess the amount of water needed to water the truffle beds. In this way, truffle production is optimised, while ensuring that watering is rational and controlled. Experiments are continuing within the CulturTruf project to determine watering thresholds for other truffle species, and also to test the use of additional devices (shading, mulching) to reduce soil
